Sacred sites to visit in Madinah

A focused selection of the most meaningful destinations within and around Madinah al-Munawwarah, ordered by spiritual priority for a first-time visitor.

1🕌

Masjid an-Nabawi

The Prophet's Mosque

The second holiest mosque in Islam, originally built by the Prophet ﷺ himself in 622 CE. Today expanded to accommodate 1+ million worshippers. The Rawdah ash-Sharifah requires Nusuk reservation.

2

Masjid Quba

The First Mosque of Islam

Established by the Prophet ﷺ upon his arrival to Madinah in 622 CE. Praying here is equivalent to performing an Umrah in reward. About 5 km south of central Madinah.

3⛰️

Mount Uhud

Jabal Uhud

Site of the Battle of Uhud (625 CE) and resting place of 70 martyrs including Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib. Visiting and reading Fatiha for the martyrs is a recommended ziyarah.

4🌅

Al-Baqi Cemetery

Jannat al-Baqi

Resting place of 10,000+ companions of the Prophet ﷺ including Othman bin Affan, several wives of the Prophet, and Hasan bin Ali. Located just east of the Haram.

5🌿

Masjid al-Qiblatain

The Two Qiblas Mosque

The mosque where the qibla direction was changed from Jerusalem to Makkah by divine revelation in 624 CE. Architecturally unique, fascinating historical site.

6🌳

Bustan Al Mustazil & Sab'a Masajid

The Seven Mosques

Cluster of small mosques around Mount Sal' commemorating the Battle of the Trench (627 CE). Quiet, beautiful gardens, popular GetYourGuide tour stop.

Plan your stay in Madinah

Everything you need to book before landing — flights, hotel, transport, connectivity.

Why Madinah deserves more than 2 nights

Most English-speaking pilgrim groups spend only 3 nights in Madinah, treating it as a quick stop before Makkah. This is a missed opportunity. Madinah rewards time and slow exploration — its atmosphere, the Prophet's ﷺ daily routine commemorated through its sites, and the spiritual reward of 1000× prayers at Masjid an-Nabawi all benefit from a 5-7 night stay.

How to organize your sacred visits

A practical itinerary that respects both spiritual focus and energy levels:

Combining Madinah with Makkah

The smart pilgrim itinerary starts with Madinah and ends with Makkah. Reasons: jet-lag recovery in the less-crowded atmosphere of Madinah, then entering ihram at Dhul Hulayfah (the miqat near Madinah) when traveling to Makkah by Haramain train or car. See our full Makkah & Madinah combined guide for the complete journey.
